UV LED for epidemic prevention and control

According to current knowledge, ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 200-280nm can kill bacteria most. For different microorganisms, the role of ultraviolet light is different. As an ultraviolet light source, a mercury lamp has a wavelength of 253.7nm. With the development of LED technology, tunable LEDs can provide specific wavelengths of ultraviolet light. UV LED-based applications have higher power and tunable wavelengths, and are expected to become the next generation of medical disinfection products.

The effect of UV LED germicidal radiation depends on the temperature and humidity of the environment. It is recommended that the UV exposure time is at least 30 minutes, but when the temperature is lower than 20 degrees Celsius or higher than 40 degrees Celsius, and the relative humidity exceeds 60%, it will take longer to achieve the same effect. In order to eliminate bacteria and viruses more effectively, NSF International has revised drinking water treatment standards to include UV LED technology.

The new coronavirus, like SARS and MERS viruses, is a positive single-stranded RNV virus. Research on the SARS virus found that this virus is sensitive to heat radiation and UVC light. When the UVC radiation intensity is greater than 90μW/cm~2, the virus can be weakened. Therefore, in theory, UV LED can destroy the new coronavirus (2019 nCov). However, no further studies have shown the effect of UV LEDs on viruses attached to water droplets. To prevent infection, frequent hand washing with soap and water and alcohol is still an effective way to avoid the spread of the virus.
